David Ryan  > Other > Bio
One day, almost a half century ago, an art director friend from Chicago visited me in Mexico City. The guy oozed talent and always carried an SLR with him no matter where he went, even though he didn't consider himself a "photographer". I was so impressed with him that I decided that this was going to be the way I was going to fulfill my obsession to explore the world - the camera would be my key to open those doors that I wanted so badly to pass through, as well as my ticket to far off places.

I was right, but what a trip!

After buying my first camera (a Pentax Spotmatic with a built in light meter!), I hitchhiked to Chicago to repay my friend's visit. He was promoting the Chicago Blues Festival at the time and managed to get me a stage pass for the bandstand in Lincoln Park. I returned to Mexico with pictures of many of the great blues masters still alive: Bo Diddly, Muddy Waters, Big Mama Thornton and a bunch of others. Those pictures were published in a Mexican magazine (for mere pesos) and I was off to the races!

Since then my cameras have indeed done what I wanted them to do. Although I may not have ever achieved the stellar fame and never-ending abundant wealth I thought I wanted, I am as grateful as one could possibly be for what photography has given me.

With so much time behind me as a photographer (golly, about 40 years I'd guess), I could easily come up with an impressive list of credits and places visited. But those things don't matter that much to me anymore - it all comes down to pretty pictures. That's what I really want - the rest can take care of itself.

The first galleries on this site consist of my recent digital photography because it was so much easier than scanning the huge number of transparencies I've got stashed away. Some of that treasure will eventually make it's way to the site as I work through it, but meanwhile I'll have to be happy with what you see here. I hope you are too!

This is a brand new gallery with no photos.
